Why ISIS offered to kill this 4-year-old baby

Image
"I want my mommy," Hawra' mumbles while cradled in the arms of her grandmother, Aliya. The four-and-a-half-year-old's lips barely move to form the weak but desperate plea. Her face is etched with small wounds, gauze wrapped around her throat and leg over burns that have yet to heal. She can't open her eyes; there is shrapnel in one of them, the other painfully closed. Doctors don't know if she will be able to see properly again. Her grandmother is lost for words. Tears start to fall. "I am thinking it's better to be dead. I am thinking to die, rather than a life like this. (Hawra') was like a little flower. She would play and run. Now, she how has no mother, no eyes," Aliya says. Hawra's mother was killed, we are told, in an airstrike on March 17. There were multiple US coalition-led strikes that day in their west Mosul neighborhood, where allegations of civilian casualties have since emerged.

Samsung

Say goodbye to the Galaxy's home button and hello to an infinity display. Samsung ( SSNLF ) unveiled the Galaxy S8 and S8+ at an event in New York on Wednesday. The new phone displays are bigger than the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge and they have curved screens that flow onto the sides. For the first time on a Samsung phone, the physical home button is removed entirely. (This is already the case on most other Android devices.) The S8 will be the first phone to feature Bixby, Samsung's new AI assistant. Despite a crowded voice assistant market, Samsung insists Bixby is "fundamentally" different from competitors like Apple's ( AAPL , Tech30 ) Siri and Amazon's ( AMZN , Tech30 ) Alexa. It remains to be seen how this will play out. Samsung touts the assistant as being able to "see, remind and recommend," but much of this functionality is already available with rival assistants. One potentially interesting feature is the ability t...

Python vs Man

Image
A seven-metre python had to be cut open by local citizens to retrieve a missing man's body. An Indonesian man, who had not been seen since the weekend, was found inside a 23ft (7m)-long python. Villagers on the island of West Sulawesi had the horrific task of cutting open the giant snake's stomach to retrieve the body. Akbar was last seen on Sunday (26 March) before he left to harvest palm oil in the remote village. When his friends and neighbours realised he did not return home by the end of the day, they began searching for him. They eventually reported the matter to the local police, according to Mashura, a spokesperson for the police in West Sulawesi province. A day later, when the police conducted a search they found a python had sprawled out in Akbar's garden, the BBC noted. Police said they feared the snake had swallowed the 25-year-old whole. "They didn't find him [Akbar], but the villagers saw an unmoving python in the dit...
